How to choose the right drinking water purifier
The right purifier depends far more on your water than on the price tag. Four questions settle almost every choice.
- What is the TDS of your water? Total dissolved solids decide between RO and non-RO. The Indian drinking water standard IS 10500:2012 sets 500 mg/L as the acceptable limit. Water above that, or water that tastes salty or brackish, needs reverse osmosis — choose the Parashu® Secure (RO+UV) Alkaline. Below it, a non-RO purifier is the better buy because it keeps natural minerals and sends no water down the drain.
- Where does your water come from? Borewell water around Kolkata often carries iron and hardness that stain fittings and leave white scale. Both Parashu® Secure models include iron and white-scale treatment; where iron is heavy, fit a whole-house iron removal filter first to protect the purifier and every tap in the house.
- How many people will drink from it? A family or home office is well served by the home range. Offices, factories, schools, restaurants and community water points need a heavy-duty system such as the Little Master or the Heavy Duty Drinking Water System.
- How much maintenance do you want to do? Every Parashu® purifier is installed by the Ira Waters team. After that, the Versatile is designed for DIY maintenance, while the Secure and heavy-duty models are permanent installations serviced by our team.

RO vs non-RO: what is the difference?
Non-RO purifiers — those built on sediment filtration, activated carbon, ultrafiltration (UF) and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection — remove particles, organic contamination, bacteria and viruses, but let dissolved minerals pass through. The water keeps its natural TDS and taste, and every litre that goes in comes out as drinking water.
Reverse osmosis (RO) goes a step further and removes dissolved salts as well, which is essential when the TDS is too high to drink comfortably. The trade-offs are that part of the incoming water leaves as reject water, and that RO also strips out useful minerals. That is why the Parashu® Secure (RO+UV) finishes its water in an alkaline mineral stage, which restores minerals and lifts the pH of the purified water.
In short: test your TDS first. If it is within the IS 10500:2012 acceptable limit of 500 mg/L, a non-RO purifier is the better choice. If it is above, choose RO with mineral restoration.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy an RO or a non-RO water purifier?
It depends on the total dissolved solids (TDS) in your water. IS 10500:2012 sets 500 mg/L as the acceptable TDS limit for drinking water. Above that, or if the water tastes salty, choose an RO purifier such as the Parashu® Secure (RO+UV) Alkaline. Below it, a non-RO purifier such as the Parashu® Secure (UF+UV) keeps the water's natural minerals and wastes no water.
Which Parashu® purifier is best for borewell water in Kolkata?
For borewell water with low TDS, the Parashu® Secure (UF+UV) handles particles, iron, white scale and germs. For salty or high-TDS borewell water, the Parashu® Secure (RO+UV) Alkaline is the right choice. Where iron is heavy, add a whole-house iron removal filter upstream.
Which purifier suits an office, factory or institution?
Parashu® Little Master suits small warehouses, NGOs, restaurants, workshops, factories and schools. The Parashu® Heavy Duty Drinking Water System is built for large factories, clubs, community water points, hotels and large kitchens. For existing water coolers, the Heavy Duty Water Cooler Commercial Filter System comes in 500 LPH and 1000 LPH versions.
Does a non-RO purifier keep the minerals in water?
Yes. Non-RO Parashu® purifiers use filtration, UF and UV rather than reverse osmosis, so they keep the water's TDS and natural minerals intact while removing particles and germs.
How much does a Parashu® drinking water purifier cost?
Listed prices start at ₹3,894 for the Parashu® Versatile and go up to ₹35,400 for the Parashu® Heavy Duty Drinking Water System. The Parashu® Secure (UF+UV) is ₹14,632 and the Parashu® Secure (RO+UV) Alkaline is ₹17,110.
Can Ira Waters build a custom drinking water purifier?
Yes. If none of the standard models fits your water or your number of users, Ira Waters can build a purifier to order. Contact the team in Kolkata on +91-9038057899 with details of your water source and daily requirement.
Do you sell Parashu® purifiers outside Kolkata?
No. Parashu® drinking water purifiers are sold in and around Kolkata only, because every unit needs installation by the Ira Waters team. Shipping is always free.
